University Police is proud to sponsor the University Police Student Assistant (UPSA) program.
This program enables students to experience the work environment and learn about its expectations and responsibilities. The program offers flexible, rewarding employment opportunities. The UPSA program is not a work study or financial aid program.
Among other work assignments, UPSAs provide walking escort services to campus community members or visitors, monitor traffic, oversee social, cultural, and sporting events. They also make rounds in the residence halls and on campus grounds and report suspicious behavior or unusual circumstances to University Police.
UPSAs are provided with opportunities to advance into leadership roles as team leaders or coordinators. Buffalo State alums who have served as UPSAs are now employed in law enforcement, teaching, military intelligence, probation, the medical field, student life positions, and managerial positions. We are proud of the quality of work our students provide and pleased when they stay with us or their entire student career.
The University Police Department hires more than 20 student assistants each semester.
Become a UPSA
Registered Buffalo State students who have completed one semester or more are eligible to apply to be a UPSA. Applicants must have a minimum 2.75 grade point average, and will be asked for a letter of reference. For more information, call (716) 878-6612, email upsa@buffalostate.edu, or visit Chase Hall 119 for an application.
Coordinator's Office
The UPSA program coordinator's office is located in Chase Hall 119. Requests for special events, questions regarding UPSA services, and employment application forms are just a few of the many daily tasks required of the program coordinators. Questions or concerns about the program can be made at (716) 878-6612.
Walking Patrol
A personal escort to your car or residence hall can be requested by calling the UPSA Coordinator's Office (878-6612) or University Police (878-6333) or extension 6333 from a campus or blue-light phone.
University Police officers wear gray uniforms with name badges; University Police Student Assistants wear bright red jackets or shirts, and ID tags. Each UPSA carries a police radio to stay in touch with the University Police dispatch center.
Walking patrol hours during the fall and spring semesters:
Monday–Friday, 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm
